"The Glen"

Glen Tanar, known to locals as the “The Glen”, is a place to enjoy, a place to live and work and a place for wildlife.

Here, nature and wilderness thrive under skilled and sensitive land use. The Estate features a varied landscape of  open moorland, forest and farmland, all carefully managed. We have internationally important conservation sites – eagles and osprey raise their young here, the elusive capercaillie and Scottish crossbills live among the pines of the old forest, salmon swim along the River Dee and spawn in the Water of Tanar, red deer stags roar on the autumn hills and the shy roe deer haunt the forest.

Glen Tanar forms a substantial part of the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland’s newest and largest national park. Land uses are balanced  through careful management to ensure a long term future for all rare wildlife and plants, and this approach to conservation has won Glen Tanar many awards, including the Green Butterfly Award and certification by the Forestry Stewardship Council.

Visitors, too, are cared for – we want people to enjoy Glen Tanar and all it has to offer, secure in the knowledge that they are a welcome part of the life of the Estate
