A hidden gem within the estate, St Lesmo’s Chapel offers a peaceful and timeless setting just a short stroll from the Victorian Ballroom and Visitor Centre. Built in 1872 by Glen Tanar’s founder, Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, it remains one of the estate’s most treasured landmarks.
Approached through an ornate cast-iron gateway, the chapel’s thatched roof, stone exterior and stained-glass windows create a sense of quiet reverence. Inside, locally grown Scotch Fir rafters twist gracefully above Glen Tanar granite walls, while a hand-cast bell completes this remarkable space.
Dedicated to St Lesmo — a holy hermit said to have lived in Glen Tanar around 790 AD — the chapel is an independent Episcopal place of worship, cared for today by the Glen Tanar Charitable Trust.
Set at the heart of the estate, the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre offers an inspiring setting for learning, exploration and connection with nature. It’s a place where groups can discover the story of Glen Tanar — its wildlife, landscapes and cultural heritage — while experiencing the spirit of Royal Deeside.
Home to the estate’s ranger service, the centre supports a wide range of educational and training activities. From environmental games for children to supervised fieldwork, conservation projects and student visits, the team brings learning to life through hands-on experience and expert guidance.
Facilities include toilets and an electric bike charging point.
Ideal for: Educational groups | Training sessions | Presentations
