Scotland’s most easterly munro is 16 miles (around 24km) along tracks and up heather clad hills. This is a walk not for the faint hearted but a great achievement once you reach the top with a view across Deeside not seen by many. For the thrill seekers who prefer a faster experience Tarland Trails is a purpose built mountain bike track with 3 kilometres of terrain where bikes can be jumped, skidded and pushed to their limits!
The nearby towns of Aboyne and Ballater are only about 15 minutes drive away. Both of these delightful towns have great quality cafes and coffee shops serving delicious local produce. There are Co-Op supermarkets in both Ballater and Aboyne and a lovely selection of restaurants serving a range of cuisines from indian and fish & chips to bistros serving more high-end a-la carte menus. There really is something for everyone.
If you wish to sample Scotland’s prized nectar then a trip to Royal Lochnagar Distillery is essential. Only a 20 minute drive away from Glen Tanar the distillery is next to none other than Balmoral Castle so why not pop in past for a tour.
So once you have walked up one of the largest hills in Aberdeenshire, paddled in the River Dee, and feasted in Deeside’s most popular eateries – return to your holiday cottage at Glen Tanar where you can put your feet up and enjoy a drink and some nibbles in front of the cosy wood burner.
