A fabric shaped by place, purpose and heritage
Created to blend seamlessly into the landscape, Glen Tanar Tweed was designed to be both practical and quietly distinctive. A working cloth that reflects the colours and textures of the glen itself.
Commissioned in 2015, the Glen Tanar Tweed was created to camouflage estate workers as they move through woodland and open ground. The brief was simple but exacting: a tweed that worked hard, wore well, and felt intrinsically connected to the landscape it belonged to.
The finished cloth uses a soft palette of greys, muted browns and blues — colours drawn directly from the estate. At once contemporary and traditional, it feels as at home on the figure of a tweed-clad ghillie as it does fashioned into a chic everyday accessory.
Scottish tweed designer Araminta Campbell spent time at Glen Tanar before beginning the design process — walking the estate, observing the light, and gaining a feel for both the land and the people who care for it. The resulting tweed balanced modern design sensibilities with a deep respect for heritage.
Months after the new tweed had been completed, an original Glen Tanar tweed dating back to the 1940s was uncovered in the estate archive. The resemblance between the historic cloth and the modern design was striking, despite the designer never having seen the original during the commission.
Whether instinct, sensitivity to place, or an intuitive understanding of history guided the design, the similarity felt almost uncanny; as though the glen itself had shaped both tweeds, decades apart.
Today, Glen Tanar’s ghillies and gamekeepers wear a tweed that closely echoes those worn by their predecessors. Practical, resilient and perfectly suited to the landscape, the Glen Tanar Tweed continues to serve its original purpose while quietly telling a much longer story.
