Forestry Training

Dr Jens Haufe, of the Forestry Commission Training Branch held a course in continuous cover here at Glen Tanar on September the 16th. Trainees that attended came from both the Forestry commission and private sector forestry managers. The focus of the course was appropriate methods of continuous cover forestry for the conditions in the North-east Scotland. This is a type of forestry management that aims to avoid the clear felling of large areas of woodland and to minimise the impact of tree felling on the environment and the scenery.

Dr Haufe was trained in these classical management techniques in Germany, where this type of forestry has been practised for centuries. It has been less popular in Scotland generally where the main aim of foresters has been concentrated on expanding the woodland cover. The students visited two areas of woodland here where selective felling has been carried out, to learn from the estate’s experience.

During the recent Royal Deeside Venison Festival writer Richard Rowe visited us and experienced one of our estate safaris to see the management and conservation efforts taking place here and experience the landscape and wildlife of Deeside at first hand.

His insightful article for Scotland Outdoors covers not just the deer and their management but also many other aspects of the estate including fire prevention in the ancient forest, the salmon fishery, and the wildlife such as grouse and capercaillie, red squirrels, pine martens and wildcats. Scoping Plans for Glen Tanar forestry

Public Invited to View Report on Glen Tanar’s 20 Year Estate Plan

Members of the public are being asked to share their views on the next stage of shaping the future of Glen Tanar Estate’s forest. A scoping report has been produced as part of an outline forest plan. The plan indicates the likely pattern of felling, restocking and forestry operations in the Aberdeenshire estate’s woodlands for the next 20 years.

The scoping report is available to view at Aboyne Library, Braeloine Visitor Centre or click the following link to download a copy:

You can also download the letters relating to the scoping.

Members of the public have until 19th June to leave their comments. The report was produced following public meetings held in Aboyne last month where Estate staff answered questions from the public and stakeholders, on maps and information outlining their proposals. A representative from Forestry Commission Scotland chaired the stakeholders meeting and was present at the public meeting.

Michael Bruce, owner of Glen Tanar Estate says, “We received many constructive suggestions and a lot of support for our outline proposals. The scoping report has collated all of the responses that we received during the public consultation and will demonstrate how we intend to address the issues raised. Members of the public have 21 days to provide feedback in response to the scoping report.

“Once this period has ended, we will begin writing the Forest Plan, which will detail all the thinning, felling and other forestry operations marked out for the next 20 years. We aim to complete this report in Autumn later this year.”

Set in the heart of Royal Deeside and in the Cairngorms National Park, Glen Tanar Estate offers a wealth of activity for visitors including walks, cycling, riding and trout and salmon fishing. There are seven self catering cottages on Glen Tanar Estate, which can accommodate a total of 37 guests. The Glen Tanar Estate Ballroom is available for functions from Weddings to Conferences.
